Nonsurgical Fat Reduction—Here are the FDA Approved Methods

Summer Skin Ready_Chispa MagazineDo you have stubborn pockets of fat on your belly, thighs, upper arms, or worse, under the chin? No matter how hard you control your diet and exercise, these never seem to leave you. Some sufferers consider surgical fat removal procedures such as liposuction. However, these invasive treatments can be as risky as other, medically necessary, surgical interventions. After all, do you want to undergo a procedure almost as risky as an open heart surgery to look good in a bikini?

If not, there are new, nonsurgical fat removal treatments that are actually approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That’s right; nonsurgical fat removal is not some scam cooked up in a back alley clinic. There are obviously certain risks involved (no medical intervention is risk-free), but they will be fully disclosed to you in advance so you can make your own choice. So, let’s look at some of these innovative fat removal methods that do not require a surgeon to cut into your body:

Zeltiq
Zeltiq is a controlled-cooling technology company. Now, you may be wondering what they have to do with belly fat. Zeltiq has developed a commercially viable fat treatment process based on cryolipolysis. Basically, cryolipolysis destroys fat cells by cooling them. This procedure targets fat cells in certain areas of the body and cools them close to 4 degrees Celsius. The cooling causes the fat cell to die without harming the overlaying skin. This “fat freezing” method is mostly used by plastic surgeons to contour parts of the body that look flabby. Zeltiq’s commercial cryolipolysis is branded as “Coolsculpting,” and its effects can last up to 3 to 4 months. If you go to the Zeltiq website, you can find local providers in your area by searching; for example, Coolsculpting in Denver.

SculpSure
Laser fat removal has been around for a while, but not all treatments available on the market have faced regulatory scrutiny for safety. SculpSure is one of the first laser fat removal treatment methods to gain approval by the FDA. SculpSure uses heat to destroy fat cells. The laser targets a certain area of fat tissue, introduces extreme heat to the cells and injures them. The immune system then targets these injured cells and removes them from the body. Adios, flabby upper arms and buttocks.

Kybella
Last year, CNN grandly announced that the FDA has (finally) approved a treatment that can get rid of that unsightly double chin. According to an American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, about 68 percent of Americans suffer from a double chin. Now, Kybella, from Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, claims to be able to simply dissolve the fat under the chin. Kybella is made from deoxycholic acid, a synthetic version of the natural acid produced by the body to absorb fat. When injected directly into fat tissue, this acid causes cell death. Kybella is therefore injected into fat tissue under the skin to remove any in excess. It looks like a great treatment, but patients require up to 50 injections with a licensed doctor.

The above treatment methods seem great, but you should not try them based on whatever’s said in the advertisements. Before you consider any kind of nonsurgical fat removal procedure, you must consult with a doctor to make sure the treatment is safe for you.
