Take Action: Three Ways To Avoid The Flu

Avoid The Flu-Chispa MagazineThe flu season is upon us and there is a particularly virulent form doing the rounds at the moment. There are also numerous coughs, colds and throat viruses to contend with too. It is not all doom and gloom though, as there are ways you can stay healthy and avoid succumbing to the worst of flu symptoms.

Get vaccinated. It may be a little late in the season now to get a vaccine, but it would be a good idea to seek medical advice to see if it’s still possible. Large numbers of the population have been vaccinated this year and include the elderly, children, people with long term health issues and health care workers. The rest of the population can request the vaccine. Flu for the majority of the population will pass after about one week, vulnerable people can develop complications relating to the virus.

Hygiene. Good hygiene is important in preventing the spread of the flu virus. Ensure your home remains meticulously clean by regularly using disinfectant products. If time is an issue it would be a good idea to hire the expertise of a  house cleaning service. Ensure food preparation areas are clean and bathrooms are cleaned with anti-bac products on a daily basis. Open windows to let in fresh air, even when the weather is wet and cold.

Handwashing is probably the best way to prevent the spread of the flu virus, be meticulous and wash hands regularly throughout the day. Children should be encouraged to wash hands at school and at home. Use lots of hand wash and warm water.

In addition to hand washing it’s a good idea to wipe down door handles, phones and keyboards with anti-bac wipes as these areas are communal and a great place or germs to harbour and multiply.

Eat healthily. There are so many foods that naturally help our immunity, eating them regularly will help to ward off viruses. Such foods have an abundance of vitamin E. Include dairy products, eggs, broccoli, green vegetables, sunflower seeds, spinach and pumpkin.

Even though it’s tempting to fill up on comfort foods during the winter months, try to eat a well balanced diet containing lots of fruit and vegetables. Citrus fruits are fantastic for warding off viruses as they are packed with plenty of vitamin C.

Drink plenty of fluids so that your kidney function remains healthy. This will help remove the toxins from your body that make you more susceptible to the flu virus.

Finally ensure that you get plenty of fresh air. Centrally heated houses are an ideal environment for bacteria and viruses to multiply. The least time spent in doors the better. An even better option is to exercise in the outdoors, a daily walk or jog will expose you to natural daylight as well as ensure your lungs and cardiac function remains healthy. Sunlight and natural daylight has the effect of lifting your mood too.

If you do get the flu ensure that you take plenty of rest, if symptoms worsen promptly seek advice from your medical practitioner.
