Breathe Easy: Clean and Freshen Up Your Bedroom to Alleviate Allergies

Considerations to Make When Replacing Your Old Bed-Chispa MagazineThere’s nothing better than collapsing into bed after a long day. But if you’re sneezing and feeling irritated within a few minutes of lying down, it can be incredibly frustrating! Many people are allergic to fibers from certain fabrics as well as dust mites. These tiny creatures feed on our skin (when it sheds), and the powerful enzyme the produce to be able to digest it can cause nasal and respiratory issues. The problem is, there’s no way to eliminate dust mites completely. They have a constant source of food from our skin, and they affect places that are difficult to wash. However, there are ways you can keep the numbers down as well as other changes you can make, so you can breathe easy and night and not be plagued by allergy symptoms.

Get it Spotless
A clean and tidy room is always beneficial. It’s a nice space where you can drift off to sleep and wake up in the morning, and helps you to stay organised. But when you have a dust allergy, cleaning is even more important. You will need to be vacuuming regularly- don’t forget places like behind the bed and behind furniture. You will also need to go around a few times a week with a damp cloth removing dust from surfaces. Electrical equipment like computers and TVs gather a lot of dust, and slatted blinds are also dust traps so don’t forget about these. Keeping a pack of moist cleaning wipes in your room makes getting dust up easy and can help you to stay on top of things.

Replace + Wash Soft Furnishings
Any soft furnishings that can be washed should be done on a regular basis. This includes things like bedding, cushion covers, throws and even washable rugs. Putting them on the hottest cycle, they can take will kill and remove dust mites. For furnishings you can’t wash like duvets and pillows, they should be replaced periodically. A pillow can double its weight in three years due to dust mites and their waste. Not good news for an allergy sufferer, plus it’s pretty disgusting! Choosing hypoallergenic duvets, pillows and bedding can also help too. These are made from materials that have been shown to be unlikely to cause a reaction. Good news if you’re sensitive and suffer from allergies.

Invest in a New Mattress
As with pillows and duvets, mattresses are another place that dust mites love. And it’s not like you can throw it in the washing machine! There are a few options, though. First, most vacuum cleaners come with a mattress attachment. Carefully vacuuming it will help to reduce the number of dust mites. Secondly, you can use a mattress protector, this gives an additional layer to prevent dust mites from entering in the first place and your skin from getting into the mattress. Finally, you can choose a hypoallergenic mattress. As unusual as it sounds, bamboo is one hypoallergenic material which can be used for mattresses. Is a mattress made from bamboo the best mattress for you?

Bear these points in mind, and you will create a bedroom which doesn’t cause allergic reactions or make them worse, meaning you can finally drift off into a peaceful sleep each night.
