Controlling Chaos When Renovating Your Home

Turning A Dilapidated House Into A Dream Home-Chispa MagazineEverything you own is covered in a thick layer of dust. If you were so inclined, you could lie down and make dust angels, which is about the only thing you can think of to make this fact more pleasurable.

There’s junk in the hallway. And, on the stairs. And, piled into every room and storage space available. There’s a toilet, waiting to be installed, nestled in the corner of the kitchen.

You feel like you’re under siege. In your less-realistic moments, you imagine this is what it’s like after the apocalypse, with everything disjointed and out of place. The disorganization and general chaos is encouraging your melodramatic side to more extreme thoughts.

So what’s happened? Is it the aftermath of the apocalypse, and you’re the sole survivor?

Nope, you’re just going through the turmoil of house renovations.

With work being done on your home, it should be simple. You fix this one bit and sure, you accept that area is going to be a mess for awhile. You know you can push through the clutter and get to the result, which you’re sure you’ll love. But in the meantime, the chaos seems to find a way to spread through your entire home. Everything is a mess, everything is dirty, and you’ve got an extreme clean-up job on your hands.

Deep breath. It doesn’t have to be like this.

Do One Thing At A Time
Let’s say you’re installing a gorgeous new pendant set of lights for the dining room. They’re on trend, gorgeous and you can’t wait to eat sitting beneath their glowing brilliance. It’s not the easiest of processes; you will need to drill through from the room above and contact an electrician to ensure it’s all safe, but it’s not a huge job.

While you’re in the process of marking out where you want the lights to go, you realize the ceiling needs a new coat of paint.

The temptation here is to put off the original job until you have painted the ceiling, which is fine. It makes sense to have a good canvas to work off. However, you have to put back every single tool, advice guide, and new product that you had set out ready to begin the work on the lamps. Don’t dump them to one side of the room and set about painting instead. You’re just creating a mess, piling up tools and making it easier to lose track of things. Speaking of…

Have A Place For Everything
During a DIY renovation, you find yourself with all sorts of tools for the job. Try and keep these all in one place; a bucket can hold smaller items like tape measures and spirit levels, while power tools should be stored in their original box. Never just lay something down on the nearest available surface; you’re going to slow yourself down searching for it when you inevitably forget where it was left.

Clean Up Every Day
If you’re embarking on a multi-day project, then finish every day with a vacuum through and a removal of rubbish. It gives you a fresh start the next day and it means you’re not saving up a long clean-up for the end, when all you want to do is collapse and admire your handiwork.
