The Intelligent Itinerant: Do Business Travel the Right Way

All You Need to Travel Safe and Sound-Chispa MagazineMore and more people are finding themselves traveling in their line of work. With all the portable devices and cloud technology we have these days, is that really any surprise? If you’re traveling a lot for work, then this could be an essential guide for you. Reduce common business travel nightmares by paying attention to these suggestions.

Getting geared up. If you’re not the one running the business, then it’s time to write down a list of equipment you’re going to need and request them as a business expense! These days, the itinerant businessperson is basically spoiled for choice when it comes to items they can use on the go. Tablets and laptops, even if you already have your own, should probably be provided by the company, especially when you consider that travelling around with all those electronics carries an inherent risk to them. Speaking of which, you’re also going to need a sturdy backpack for business professionals to take your equipment in when going from A to B.

Time-saving tips. When booking flights, people tend to make a bunch of mistakes. One of the most common? Not appreciating the difference between ‘direct’ and ‘non-stop’! Many get the two confused, believing that direct flights won’t stop in another airport along the way. ‘Direct flight’ basically means you don’t have to switch to another plane. You may not switch over, but you might still stop. Non-stop flights are the ones you want if time is of the essence.

Business loyalty. Frequent flier programs are your friends. Airlines and other travel businesses love to keep traveling professionals with their company – it brings in a lot of money, after all! They want these itinerants to keep traveling with them for as long as they can. It’s important to know this because they’ll do quite a lot to keep you happy. Being loyal to their brand can help get you extra miles and other elite business perks.

Travel apps. Most people have absolutely no idea how many miles they’ve accumulated unless they’re keeping close track of them. Thankfully, there are apps out there that can help you do just that. Using those miles is going to help you save a bunch of money, and if you’re working for an employer then they’re going to be pretty grateful about that. Of course, there’s always the chance that you’ll be able to use those miles for yourself, but you’ll want to check with your boss about that one.

Finding a good work space. Wherever you’re headed, you’re going to need somewhere to actually do your work. Quite often, traveling businesspeople are going to meetings with clients or partners. In that case, you’ve already got a venue for that. But if you’ve got other tasks to complete, then you need somewhere warm, dry and with WiFi. Do you know where to find such a location? Make sure you look out for these “work hotspots” before you head off. There will be a bunch of temporary or co-working spaces in pretty much any city.
