Is Marriage Really Just A Bit Of Paper?

Military Marriage_Chispa MagazineFor some couples, there’s nothing more important than getting married. For others, marriage represents a bit of paper. If you’re thinking about taking the next step in your relationship, you may be considering getting married, but what does marriage mean to you and how can you maximize your chances of making the right choice?

The significance of marriage… Everybody is different, and we all have a different perspective on our relationships and the role they play in our lives. Some people grow up with a burning desire to find love and get married, but not everyone is desperate to tie the knot. Marriage can have religious connotations, or it can be an agreement between two people that marks a union that will last forever. Whether you’re religious or not, marriage is a long-term commitment, which is recognized by the legal system. If you’re of the opinion that marriage is nothing more than a piece of paper, you probably feel that you’re able to commit to somebody you love without hosting a ceremony or signing on the dotted line. You may feel that getting married won’t enhance your relationship or change it in any way, and many married couples feel that life is no different once they’ve said I do. The question of whether or not to get married comes down to individual choice. For some, it means the world, for others it carries much less gravity.

Your rights as a married person… To you, marriage may be all about love and pledging to stand by your other half for the rest of your life, but there are legal implications of becoming a married couple. When you’re married, your entitlements change, and your partner has equal rights to your assets, even if you owned them before the wedding ceremony. Before you get married, it is useful to learn more about the legalities of marriage even if you’re much more concerned with the romantic aspect of the union. Every person should be aware of their rights. If you’re familiar with US culture, or you’ve ever watched reality shows, you may know that prenuptial agreements are popular in America. Although much less common, they are becoming more popular in the UK. You may have absolutely no interest in prenups, but if you do want to find out more, you’ll find useful information about prenuptial agreements here. If you’ve been married before and you’ve been through a very distressing divorce, for example, you may want to protect yourself just in case a second marriage doesn’t work out how you hoped.

Is marriage right for you… There’s no right or wrong answer to this question. This is a decision you and your partner have to make. You may feel incredibly strong about getting married and having that bond recognized by the church, but not everyone has an innate desire to tie the knot. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you’re comfortable with your decision. You should never feel pressured into getting married; it is a gift and one that needs to be cherished.
