Not a Cog in a Machine: Taking Control of Your Life

Chispa Magazine-Control LifeIt very often happens that a person, wanting to make sure they’re not left behind, find a job—any job—just to make sure they can afford things like travel trips and rent and so on. This is good for a while, but then to some people, it eventually occurs to them that they’re not really doing anything: they’re just a cog in the machine. If you’re working in a mindless job in an office, you might think that about your own position. The good news is that you don’t have to settle for just being a cog.

Enough is Enough
Everyone has bad days in the office; you’ll have them in whatever you’re doing. It’s when you have a bad year in the office that you should seriously think about doing something else. At one point or another, you have to decide for yourself that ‘enough is enough’ and do something new. Even then, don’t stand up and quit there and then: develop an exit strategy that’ll result in a more satisfying life. It’s closer than you think.

Becoming Your Own Boss
For many people, the dream job is one in which they’re in charge or at least one in which they’re actually part of the process, rather than just one part of many. If that’s your dream, make it come true. You could become an entrepreneur, or become a freelance writer, artist, designer, programmer—wherever your talents lie. You need more than just the will. If you’re an entrepreneur, you’ll need executive leadership skills, financial backing, other people involved, and so on. If you’re freelance, you’ll have to become skilled at finding new clients and managing your time effectively. But none of these things are beyond anyone!

Giving Back
If you’ve been working for a big corporation, you might decide that now’s the time to give something back, to do something that positively affects other help in a direct way. You could get involved in nursing, or social welfare, or any of the other positions that exist in what some call ‘the third sector.’ That is the charity and social sectors. You might find this type of work much more satisfying than mindlessly punching keys and computing numbers all day because you know a real difference is being made through your work.

Following Your Passion
There is no right path to take. You have to do what feels right to you. One of the best ways to find out what that might be is to ask yourself, ‘what’s my passion?’ Whatever it is, they’ll be jobs related to it, though how many will depend on how common your passion is. Explore some options and see what’s out there: there’s nothing better than spending your days doing something you love!

Simple Joys
Ultimately, you don’t have to do anything that makes you miserable: life is all about being happy. If you’re not happy doing what you do now, find something that’ll put that spring back in your step. You deserve it.
