The Surprising Benefits of Joining an Acting Class

Starting Business-Chispa MagazineWhen most people think of self-improvement strategies and activities, few of them will list acting in their top ten. After all, not everyone wants to tread the boards in a musical on Broadway, and when you are trying to run a successful business, who has the time anyway?

But, acting classes can actually be hugely beneficial to business-minded folks like yourself. Here are few of the surprising reasons why you might want to stop attending your life coach sessions and take up acting classes instead.

Improve your communication skills. Business is all about communication, so why not learn from the trade that communicates best? Acting can help you speak clearly, with power, and master your diction and dialogue. And if you want to keep people interested in what you have to say, it’s often how you talk that has the greatest impact – not the content of your speech. Ultimately, if you want to come across as confident, unique, and capable, acting skills – combined with your business nous – can help.

Self-consciousness. Is your introversion holding you back? Self-conscious people can often find important business activities like networking and public speaking a genuine ordeal. And even when you manage to get the words out, your body language could be showing more tells than you think. Acting will help you overcome all your body image and confidence problems. You will find you stop avoiding eye contact, and reduce the natural body tics you have. You won’t fidget as much, or use sub consciously defensive gestures such as folding your arms. Don’t forget, when you are tense and self-conscious you have no hope of expressing yourself correctly. So, iron out your kinks with acting.

The social aspect. You will meet a lot of incredibly friendly and loyal people through acting—people you wouldn’t usually know existed. According to Audition Headquarters, there are acting schools all over the country, so it’s not like you need to move away to meet all these new friends, either. There’s a lot of trust involved in acting, too, as well as discussion of what it means to be human—you will ‘go deep’ in more ways than one. Don’t forget, the more comfortable we are socially, the happier we are—and finding those trusted friends will help you grow to be a more confident person.

Relieving stress. As a busy business person, life will be stressful and tense at times. And what better way to wind down after a nightmare day in the office than to let go and tap into other kinds of emotions? When you are acting, you get the chance to switch off from real life, and become someone else—there is no better way of switching off, other than, perhaps, meditation.

An understanding of human nature. As we mentioned above, acting is the warts and all portrayal of humans. You will discuss all kinds of things like why people act the way they do, and what drives their emotions. As a business owner, you will learn an awful lot about folk in all kinds of situations, and it will give you some incredible insight into the minds of the population—and your customers.
