Do You Have One Of These Horrible Bosses?

Dave-Ramsey-Should-Retirees-Move-Investments-to-a-CD-Chispa-MagazineWhile we’d all like to have jobs where we work under someone we’re proud to call our boss, not everyone is that lucky. Despite the noble principles that a lot of businesses are founded on, bad bosses always seem to find their way into the upper echelons of a business. While people like this come in all shapes and sizes, I’ve identified a few common categories of terrible bosses…

Slackers
Having got into their position of power at the company, the “slacker” type of boss will spend most of the week browsing through online stores, taking long lunches, “networking” on their smartphones (Facebooking) and generally taking it easy. When Friday rolls around, they suddenly become a flustered workaholic, scrambling to get uncompleted projects together and trying to get people like you to pick up the pieces. In some workplaces, these bosses can even endanger the lives of their workers, and often end up sending people running (or limping) to a workers comp lawyer. One way of getting around this kind of issue is by using your boss’s laziness to bolster your own career. Ask him or her if you can take the lead on any upcoming projects. They’ll be happy to lighten their workload, and will give you the opportunity to show the higher-ups what you can do.

Time Bombs
You’re getting to the end of the day, and you’ve been a busy bee. You’ve answered all your important emails, submitted work well before deadline, and you’re getting in the zone for some well-deserved Netflix, when suddenly boom! Your boss comes up to your desk and starts screaming up a storm over one little detail, right in front of all your colleagues. Sending your boss leaflets on anger management classes probably won’t go down to well. Instead, in order to diffuse this human time bomb, you should do your best to avoid triggering them in the first place. Yes, with people like this, there are going to be freak-outs every now and then which no one saw coming. However, if you pay enough attention, it won’t be all that hard to determine the things that set them off, and then avoiding these at all costs. Avoid their pet hates, and you’ll make your working life much more bearable!

Egomaniacs
The title pretty much sums up this particular species of bad boss. These are the bosses who think that company policy applies to everyone but them. They behave as if everyone, you included, is only in the office to let them know how awesome they are, and pick up the work which they don’t want to touch. They’ll take credit for team efforts regularly, but when something goes wrong they can’t wait to pass the buck. Changing your job might not be all that convenient at this point in your career, so instead avoid validating egomaniacs as often as possible. You’re not going to get far totally disregarding the head of your team. However, you can still avoid the compliments, attention and approval which make egomaniacs even worse!
