Becoming Indoctorinated: Routes Into Medical Professions

Why You Should Start Medical Training This Year-Chispa MagazineWhen you ask children what they’d like to be when they grow up, a few answers are relatively common. Besides certain animals and superheroes, children will often say they want to be one of the following. Firefighters, astronauts, ballerinas, explorers, soldiers and doctors. What makes these roles so appealing to children? Perhaps it’s the sense of adventure. Maybe it’s helping other people. Maybe it’s the uniforms and outfits involved. Regardless of the reasons, many children grow out of these dreams. Many end up working nine to five office jobs, sat behind computers and hiding in their cars during their lunch hour. But why do these professions have to remain dreams for so many? One factor could be that many consider themselves incapable of such roles. They see the dangers and complications. Another reason is that many simply don’t know how to get into the profession in the first place. For now, we’ll focus on doctors.

Dedication
You can’t go into the medical field with a half-hearted attitude. It has to be something that you are completely dedicated to. It takes years of your life to train to become a doctor. You will enter junior roles and work long relentless hours. Once you’re finally in the position you want, people are literally putting their lives in your hands. That’s a huge responsibility. If you’re going ahead with this decision, you need to be 100 percent sure it’s exactly what you want. You will also need to make a Hippocratic oath. This is an oath stating the legal and moral obligations of doctors, which you agree to adhere to unconditionally.

Education
Education plays a massive part in medicine. From a young age, potential medical staff are encouraged to focus on scientific subjects, such as biology. Whether you choose science from early on or not, you will need a degree in medicine to practice. These typically last around five to six years. Doctors often go on to a two-year postgraduate masters degree. Then a further three to eight years in specialist training. This is a large amount of time. It also isn’t cheap. However, the rewards at the end will make it all worth it.

Roles
There are numerous types of doctors out there. From GPs to heart surgeons; midwives to psychiatrists. You will need some kind of idea what area you’d like to specialize in. There are endless jobs in the medical field, and competition is fierce. So, it’s important to have a good idea of your aims and the requirements for the role if you’re going to stand out. Figure out your strengths or what you enjoy in particular and work on it. Go in that direction, and your capabilities will come to the front.

Similar Jobs
If you find that practicing medicine isn’t for you, there are various other careers out there that might better suit your wants and needs. Examples can include veterinary medicine, the medical humanities, alternative medicine and teaching or training staff.
