- Leadership Skills
A manager in the office needs to be able to command the respect of everyone else in the office. You’ll be leading the team and showing them which direction they should be pulling in. This is not something that everyone has the ability to do. Leaders have to be able to motivate people no matter how they’re feeling, which is why your enthusiasm has to be infectious without becoming annoying. The last thing a leader should be is annoying
- Computer Skills
Every office is a technological playground nowadays. Every year that passes sees new gadgets and accessories entering the office. You have to be able to keep track of these advancements and be proficient enough with your computer skills to understand everything that happens in the office; this is part of being an office manager. You have to be good at lots of things, even if you’re not an expert in most departments.
- Decision-Making
Making decisions quickly without any hesitations is vital in a busy office environment. And, when a decision needs to be made, everyone will be looking toward you to make them. This means having to deal with lots of pressure heaped on you by other people. If you can’t handle this kind of pressure, being an office manager might not be the career path for you. And, once you’ve made the decision, the responsibility for its consequences will be placed squarely on your shoulders.
- Multitasking
Most modern workplaces are incredibly busy; this is something that you can’t avoid. This means you’ll probably be juggling lots of different tasks at once each and every day. This can get very stressful if you’re not used to the responsibility. If you’re the kind of person that gets stressed early, you might not be the best person for the job.
- Health + Safety Awareness
Health and safety is a big deal in the modern workplace, and as a manager, it will be up to you to take care of this. You’ll need to make sure that the office is tidy, and that there are no risks of people hurting themselves. You’ll also need to have first aid skills if something disastrous does happen. - Mediation Skills
Relationships can often become fractured in the office, and arguments can often break out. You’ll have to be the person who tried to repair these relationships and hold the team together as best you can. Not everyone has the mediation skills or prayer skills, but they are necessary if you want to be successful in this kind of role. It’s important that managers don’t take sides and alienate people in the office when arguments do occur.
