Take Your Business Higher with the Right Hire

Vision to Your Team_Chispa MagazineHiring people can often be pretty expensive, so you’ve got to make sure you do it right. Getting it wrong can see you hiring someone who will drag your entire company down. Your recruitment methods may even be putting off some amazing candidates. So, on’t make these mistakes…

Ignoring internal candidates. Some employers think that employing internal candidates is a fool’s game. After all, that just means that you’ll have to hire someone else to fill their old position! This is an understandable worry. After all, recruitment isn’t cheap. But what if someone on the inside really is the best person for the job? They’ll also be much more prepared for what’s ahead. This saves you money on training and in terms of lost productivity. Plus, the knowledge that employees can move up the ladder is a great tool for motivation. Make sure you consider your current employees.

Using the wrong job posting techniques. A lot of employers keep it pretty bare-bones when it comes to hiring. They’ll send out their job descriptions to all the big names in job websites and that’ll be that. Of course, as the rest of this article suggests, you should be doing a bit more than this. But even if you keep it this simple, things can get pretty complex. If you need to update descriptions or add new positions, then you’re in trouble! You’ll have to remember all the places in which the job posting is being hosted. And some of these places may charge you if you want to update anything. And there are plenty of job sites that simply won’t get the traffic you need. But there are resources out there that make the whole process much simpler. Using the right job posting sites is absolutely essential.

Not considering the competition. You’re not going to hire most of the candidates, of course. Heck, you may not even have the resources to respond to the majority of them. You may only decide that one or two of the bunch are good enough for the job. So the last thing you need is for a great candidate to actually turn down a job offer. It’s best that you tackle the most common reason that someone would turn down an offer you make. That reason is that someone else has offered them better pay for a similar job! Make sure the salary and benefits you’re offering trump the competition. Of course, there will be some really big companies who you may have trouble competing with. That means you have to put focus on other areas!

Evading the truth. Yes, you need to make sure that your job description is amazing. In a way, you really have to sell this position. But that doesn’t mean you should dabble in false advertising! I can think of at least a couple of jobs I’ve been in where the work simply didn’t match the description very well. Don’t mention perks that are rare or may not even exist anymore. Don’t make the job out to be more complex than it is. (Some people want that complexity and need it to further their career.) Your description should be in-depth and exciting. But it should never be dishonest.
