Tips To Surviving Your First Job

Why Women Should Stop Trying to Be Like Men in the Work Place-Chispa MagazineEntering the work world is a big step in your lifetime. You’re done graduating and ready to move on to the next chapter. It’s normal to feel nervous about the leap and unsure of yourself. Landing your first job is a big accomplishment, and you should be proud of yourself.

It’s smart to get an idea of what to expect going into your first work experience. Stay level-headed and know that if it doesn’t work out, there’ll be another opportunity down the road. Keep in the present moment and think about what you hope to achieve in your new position. See tips to surviving your first job.

Remain Patient
Stay calm and remain patient as you begin your training. You’re not going to know all of the information right away, and you’ll have lots of questions. This may feel very different for you versus when you were in college and felt like you knew it all. Remain tolerant of others and also yourself as you get acquainted with your surroundings. Give it time and let the new concepts sink in before you start to panic.

Come Prepared
It’s okay to study ahead and come in with a few tips and tricks up your sleeve. Hop on the Internet to collect information regarding shortcuts for using Excel and data retrieval tips for when your information goes missing. More often than not, people are caught off guard by problems that lead to data loss; something goes wrong and the next thing they know their files, pictures, and other important documents are lost and they’re left with no idea what to do or how to retrieve them. The more prepared you are, the easier it will be to recover your data if loss does occur. Work ahead and don’t get caught off-guard. You’ll also impress your new employers.

Listen More
Practice your active listening skills when you’re starting your new job. Talking will only make you feel more nervous. It’s common to want to speak when you’re feeling uneasy, but try your best to simply listen. Take in the information they’re sharing with you and give it time to sink in. You learn more when you listen and take notes. Ask questions at the appropriate time and get your concerns clarified. As you get more comfortable with your work, you’ll be able to interact and ask questions more naturally.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help
The first few weeks of a new job are going to feel overwhelming. Although you want to focus on listening, don’t be afraid to speak up when you have an important question. Go to your boss one-on-one and sit down to discuss your questions and concerns. Approach a coworker who you can trust about your inquiries and see if they can help. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help when it’s appropriate.

Know this change will be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time… enjoy the moment and remind yourself that one day, in the near future, you too will mentor a new-comer. So, take notes and pass on the tips toward success.
