The Common Traits Of Creative Business Leaders

Being a business owner, a
small business owner anyway, is pretty hard. You’ve almost always got a mountain of tasks on your “to-do” list, and a lot of people looking to you for guidance and leadership. If you’re comparing yourself to your role models and feel like you’re coming up short, don’t worry, it’s something we all go through. One of the various traits you might want to work on is your creativity. Here are a few of the defining traits of creative business leaders.

First of all, creative business leaders listen to their instincts. You know as well as I do that there are some things we know to be true, and others that we feel are true. If you’ve gone through as much education as most business leaders have, you’ll probably lean on this existing bank of knowledge to make decisions, and solve any problems that can arise. The most creative business leaders out there are the ones who realize that the things they instinctively sense have a certain intrinsic value as well. You might have an issue with balancing out your intuition with your logic. The truth of the matter is these two things aren’t at odds with each other. In fact, if you want to be a truly creative leader, you need to find some way of getting the two things to coincide.

Another common trait you see in a lot of creative business owners is that they act fast. One of the biggest obstacles which would-be business owners come across is their own perfectionism. I’ve heard of countless people who were bursting with great small business ideas, but never made any of them a reality because they always hit a big “what if?”. If you want to be a truly creative business leader, you can’t spend too much time worrying about what could go wrong. Of course, it pays to have a solid business plan. However, if you spend months or years mapping out every detail, you’ll always come across one little flaw and never make any real progress. If you want to be the creative leader your business needs, you need to think fast and act fast.

The final, and most definitive trait of a creative leader, is that they rattle cages. Nothing is static. You and I are always changing; and countless people have both started and ended their lives in the past hour, and the scope of business is always in a state of flux. Instead of shying away from this universal constant and sticking with what they know, creative leaders make themselves a central part of this change. If you want to be a more creative leader, then you need to be looking to the future, and thinking of ways to disrupt your niche and rattle cages. Sure, you can get by modelling all your ideas on things that have been done before. However, this will only get you so far. If you want to be really successful, you need to find a way to be different.
